Neutral pion production from the proton using photon beams in the energyrange of 280-400 MeV has been measured from a solid HD target. Thistarget is a novel design which uses molecular hydrogen-deuterium at verylow temperatures, and will be used for polarized target experiments in thefuture. The current results are from an unpolarized target, but are usedto compare neutral pions from H and D nuclei simultaneously. In this way, uncertainties between targets and different beam conditions are reduced. The physics that we learn is whether deuterium can be used as a "freeneutron" target, or whether the bound neutrons with final stateinteractions make it difficult to extract free neutron observables. Theresults of free proton and bound neutron measurements will be comparedfrom a viewpoint of isospin symmetry.
