It is shown that Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) theory and Relativistic Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (RQRPA) present a covariant formulation of density functional theory, which has been applied recently with considerable succes to the description of nuclei all over the periodic table. A surway is given over new phenomena in the region of nuclei far from the valley of stability, as neutron skins and halo's, shellquenching, proton radioactivity, superheavy elements and new collective modes such as pygmy modes and torroidal resonances.
