Final Circular

The international conference FUSION03 on heavy-ion fusion reactions and nuclear fusion and decay in matter will be held from November 12 till 15, 2003, at Hotel Taikanso at Matsushima Bay near Sendai, Japan. The conference will start at 9:00 on November 12 (Wednesday) and end at 12:30 on November 15 (Saturday).

The conference will cover:

The conference will focus on new ideas about the subjects discussed in the Fusion97, International Workshop on Heavy-Ion Collisions at Near-Barrier Energies, which was held at South Durras, Australia. It will also include topics related to nuclear fusion reactions and radioactivity in matter.

There will be about 100 participants.

Scientific program

A preliminary program is available at the web site ( It will be updated if there occurred changes.

Overhead and LCD projectors are available for oral presentations. The speakers who plan LCD presentations should bring their own laptop PC. The power plug adapters should also be brought. The electric voltage in Japan is 100 V. The plug is type-A (American 2pin socket). Each speaker is strongly recommended to test the connection between his/her laptop PC and the LCD projector prior to the presentation.

The conference will be held in the room Chiyonoma-1 on the 1st floor of Hotel Taikanso from November 12 (Wednesday) to November 14 (Friday). The room changes on November 15 (Saturday) to another room in Hotel Taikanso.


The Proceesings will be published as a supplement of Progress of Theoretical Physics.

The instruction of the manuscript will be distributed during the conference.


The registration desk will be open from 16:00 to 21:00 on November 11 (Tuesday) near the Tea Lounge on the 1st floor of Hotel Taikanso. It will be open from 8:00 to 9:00 on November 12 (Wednesday).

The conference fee of 20,000 yen is charged to cover expenses including the conference proceedings. It should be paid by cash in Japanese yen at the registration desk.

Hotel accommodation

Most of the participants will stay in Hotel Taikanso and Hotel Folkloro Matsushima. The locations of the hotels are indicated in the map. The rooms have been assigned following the requests in the registration form except for those participants who have been contacted individually by the secretariat.

The check-in and check-out dates of all the participants are listed in the web page ( The change or cancellation of the room reservation should be notified as soon as possible to the FUSION03 secretariat before October 20. After October 20, the participants should contact both the hotel (by FAX) and the conference secretariat for changes or cancellations. The cancellation charge is 30% if notified 2-3 days in advance, 50% if notified 1 day before, and 100% on the same day or not notified. Those who will arrive after 21:00 are recommended to notify beforehand the expected arrival time to the FUSION03 secretariat.

The room rate is the same as or slightly lower than that announced in the 2nd circular depending on the room. Each participant should pay the room charge (and tax) directly to the hotel. Major credit cards are acceptable including VISA, MasterCard and AMEX.

A bus transportation to Hotel Taikanso will be arranged in the morning for the participants who stay in Hotel Folkloro Matsushima. The bus will leave Hotel Folkloro at 8:30 in the morning. The shuttle bus of Hotel Taikanso will take the participants to JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station.

Additional tickets for accompanying persons for the banquet, reception and the lunches for November 12 and 14 are available for 5,000 yen in total.

The room rate includes breakfast. In Hotel Taikanso, the breakfast will be served at the Restaurant La Selese at the lower level of the 1st floor. In Hotel Folkloro Matsushima, the breakfast will be served in the lounge.

Conference site

Matsushima Bay is about 40 km away from Sendai. "Matsu" means pine trees. "Shima" means island. There are about 300 islands covered with pine trees in the bay. That is why the bay is called Matsushima Bay. It has been said to be one of the three most beautiful scenic spots in Japan.

Hotel Taikanso is on the height close to the coast looking down the bay and is one of the largest resort hotels in Matsushima.

The afternoon of November 13 (Thursday) is kept free for each participant. You can enjoy a sightseeing cruise in the Matsushima Bay. The round trip boat leaves each one hour, and it takes about one hour. There are several historical sightseeing spots such as Zuiganji-Temple and Godaido near the coast. You can take a walk in an island connceted by a bridge. Lots of restaurants can be found along the street near the coast line. There are several restaurants also inside Hotel Taikanso. Pamphlets with more informations and a map will be distributed at registration.

The average lowest and highest temperatures in the middle of November in the Matsushima area are about 5 and 15 degrees centigrade.

ATM and currency exchange

The participants are recommended to have changed money before comming to Matsushima, even though US Dollar can be changed to Japanese Yen at the counter of Hotel Taikanso.

ATM is available at the Matsushima-Kaigan Post Office from 9:00 to 17:30 (Mon-Fri) and from 9:00 to 12:30 (Sat). It is about 15 minutes walk from JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station to the post office (map). The ATM accepts cash cards participating in the PLUS and CIRRUS networks. It also accepts credit cards issued by VISA International, MasterCard International, American Express, Diners Club and JCB.

Internet connection

Hotel Taikanso will supply several PC's connected to the internet at the bridal corner near the front desk. The fee is 500 yen for 30 minutes use.

The participants may connect their own PC to the wireless LAN in the lobby of Hotel Taikanso. Connection is free of charge. A wireless LAN card or an internal wireless LAN interface is necessary.

Travel information

From Tokyo/Narita by trains

Matsushima can be reached from Narita New Tokyo International Airport (NRT) through Tokyo and Sendai by JR (Japan Railways). It takes about 60 minutes by Narita Express from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station, then about 2 hours from Tokyo Station to Sendai Station by Hayate/Komachi or Yamabiko superexpress of a JR line named Tohoku Shinkansen, and then about 30 minutes from Sendai Station to Matsushima-Kaigan Station by JR Senseki Line with a train for Ishinomaki (Do not take trains for other destinations). Please do not confuse the destination "Matsushima-Kaigan Station" with another station "Matsushima Station" along another JR line.

The price for a one-way trip from Narita Airport to Matsushima-Kaigan Station is about 13,000 yen. If you want to check the time table or reserve seats beforehand, please visit the JR East web site.

A part of the time table of JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan is shown below for the participants arriving late on November 11. Before 19:00, there are approximately two trains an hour.

From Sendai Airport

Sendai Airport (SDJ), the nearest airport, has some international flights and domestic flights from Tokyo/Narita, Nagoya, Osaka/Itami etc. The airport limousine bus to JR Sendai Station takes about 40 minutes and the one-way fare is 910 yen. Another about 30 minutes is needed to go from JR Sendai Station to Matsushima-Kaigan Station by JR Senseki Line as mentioned before.

There exists also a direct bus connection from the Sendai Airport to Matsushima, operated by Nihon-Sankei Kotsu (FAX: +81-(0)22-354-5523) and Matsushima Kokusai Kanko (FAX: +81-(0)22-353-3431). It takes about an hour form Sendai Airport (Bus Stop No. 3) to JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station. One should get off at this station before the final destination of the bus. The fee is 1,500 yen and reservation is required. Reservation should be made by FAX to the bus company or at the front desk of the hotel.

From JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station to hotels

Please find a shuttle bus of Hotel Taikanso at JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station. The shuttle bus is waiting for guests at the station between 14:00 and 18:00. If you arrive later or you cannot find the bus, please call Hotel Taikanso (022-354-2161).

If you directly go to Hotel Folkloro Matsushima, it will take about 7 minutes on foot from JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station (map). It is recommended to use a taxi if you have a heavy luggage. The fare will be about 700 yen.
