International Conference

FUSION03: From a Tunneling Nuclear Microscope to Nuclear Processes in Matter

Matsushima, Miyagi, Japan
November 12-15, 2003

2nd Circular

Dear Colleagues,

We are organizing an international conference on heavy-ion fusion reactions and nuclear fusion and decay in matter. The conference will be held from November 12 till 15, 2003, at Hotel Taikanso at the Matsushima Bay near Sendai, Japan. The conference will start at 9:00 on November 12 (Wednesday) and end at 12:30 on November 15 (Saturday).

The Conference will cover:

The conference will focus on new ideas about the subjects discussed in the Fusion97, International Workshop on Heavy-Ion Collisions at Near-Barrier Energies, which was held at South Durras, Australia. It will also include topics related to nuclear fusion reactions and radioactivity in matter.

There will be about 100 participants. Selected contributions will be orally presented. Poster sessions might also be arranged. The proceedings of the conference, which include both the oral and poster presentations, are planned to be published as a volume of an international journal.

A conference fee of 20,000 yen will be charged to cover expenses including the conference proceedings. It should be paid by cash in Japanese yen at the registration desk which will be opened in the afternoon on November 11 (Tuesday) and during the conference.

The organizing committee might be able to partially support the expenses of young participants, especially of students. Those participants should directly contact with the organizer of the conference or indicate at the time of abstract submission.

We very much appreciate if you could circulate this announcement among your colleagues. News about the conference can be found on the web site: http://www.nucl.phys.tohoku.ac.jp/fusion03/

Contribution papers

All the participants who wish to present a talk or a poster are requested to submit a one-page abstract to the FUSION03 secretariat. The deadline is August 20. Please follow the instruction for the abstract submission (http://www.nucl.phys.tohoku.ac.jp/fusion03/abstinst.html). The submitted abstracts are selected for oral presentations. Each subscriber will be informed of the selection before September 10.

Hotel accommodation and registration

All the participants will be accommodated in Hotel Taikanso or in another hotel "Folkloro Matsushima". A shuttle bus will be chartered between the two hotels. The room rates and the number of reserved rooms are:

Since the number of reserved rooms is limited, earlier submission is recommended. The rooms will be assigned on the first-come-first-served basis.

The third and final circular will be sent to the registered participants on around October 10.

Conference site

The Matsushima bay is about 40 km away from Sendai. "Matsu" means pine trees. "Shima" means island. There are about 300 islands covered with pine trees in the bay. That is why the bay is called the Matsushima bay. It has been said to be one of the three most beautiful scenic spots in Japan.

The Hotel Taikanso is on the height close to the coast looking down the bay and is one of the largest resort hotels in Matsushima.

Travel information

Matsushima can be reached from Narita New Tokyo International Airport (NRT) through Tokyo and Sendai by JR (Japan Railways). It takes about 60 min by Narita Express from the Narita Airport to the Tokyo Station, then about 2 hours from the Tokyo Station to the Sendai Station by Hayate/Komachi or Yamabiko superexpress of a JR line named Tohoku Shinkansen, and then about 30 min from the Sendai Station to the Matsushima-Kaigan Station by the JR Senseki Line. Please do not confuse the destination "Matsushima-Kaigan Station" with another station "Matsushima Station" along another JR-line named Tohoku-Honsen. The price for a one-way trip from the Narita Airport to the Matsushima-Kangan station is about 13,000 yen. If you want to check the time table or reserve seats beforehand, please visit the JR East web site (http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/index.html).

Sendai Airport (SDJ), the nearest airport, has some international flights and domestic flights from Tokyo/Narita, Nagoya, Osaka/Itami etc. The airport limousine to the JR Sendai Station takes about 40 min and the one-way fare is 910 yen. Another about 30 minutes is needed to go from the JR Sendai Station to the Matsushima-Kaigan Station by the JR Senseki Line as mentioned before. There exists also a direct bus from the Sendai Airport to Matsushima, operated by Nihon-Sankei Kotsu (http://www.tabi-bus.co.jp/main.htm, written in Japanese). It takes about an hour to the JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station. The last bus leaves the Sendai Airport at 19:20. The fee is 1,500 yen and reservation is required.

Please find a shuttle bus of your hotel at the JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station.
